Of course what 30th birthday trip with friends would be complete without a 30th birthday party? We had long thought about staying at the Park Hyatt because of its amazing amenities and views (it’s the world’s tallest hotel) but had eventually looked elsewhere for space and location concerns. So obviously we had to still go!
Appetizers and ambiance on the dining level were fine, and I’m glad we got to see the lights of the city until they were abruptly shut off at 10pm. Seriously, I thought there was a brownout. The views were insane as you can see. This was easily the highest floor we saw on the trip.
Things really got fun when we moved upstairs to the upstairs bar. We were delighted when we learned that an Australian singer was performing, and once she realized we were not only the only native English speakers/singers/yellers, but also super excited, well things just kept going up. When you open your set with Whitney that’s always a good sign. She dedicated a song to Layla, offered us advice on where to go the next day, and invited us to meet her later. I think all the back and forth confused the management because they quickly went from cold and aloof to very friendly and apologetic, bringing us free champagne and cake. Hazel, we owe you one.
Lastly, what trip is complete without meeting random European businessmen desperate to have fun? They were Danish, built “assisted mobility devices” (I was like, “…oh you mean Hoverounds? We have those in Florida.”), and had names like Lars and Jens or something. They were getting up super early the next day to take a train to some dreary tiny town where their hoveround factory was located.
